UK hiring differs from many other markets in small but costly ways. Here are the seven that trip up the most people we've spoken to.
1. A photo
A recruiter using an Applicant Tracking System will see a photo as a diversity risk flag, and many UK ATSes strip them out and mangle the layout. Skip the photo.
2. Date of birth
Asking for it is actually illegal under UK equality law. Don't invite the bias.
3. A three-page CV
Three-page CVs signal inefficiency; most UK recruiters reject them sight unseen. Two pages. That's the cap.
4. Overusing "I"
UK convention is implied first person: "Led the billing migration", "Delivered the quarterly report". It's tighter and easier to scan.
5. Personal statements that generalise
"A hard-working team player with excellent communication skills" is wallpaper. Keep the statement role-specific and under four lines.
6. Ignoring ATS keywords
Large employers filter by keyword before human review. Mirror language from the job description, not in a stuffed-keyword way, but make sure the real skills are named the way the employer names them.
7. Inflated grades
Always state real results. UK recruiters check transcripts. Getting caught exaggerating a 2:1 into a first is a reference-killing mistake.
At a glance: bin this, do that
What gets binned
- A photo and your date of birth on page one
- Three pages covering everything you have ever done
- Every bullet starting with I
- A 2:1 rounded up to a first
What gets read
- Contact details only, no personal data
- Two pages, tightly edited
- Bullets led by strong verbs: Led, Delivered
- Your real classification, transcript-proof
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common UK CV mistakes international students make? Including a photo or date of birth, running to three pages, overusing "I" instead of implied first person, generic personal statements, ignoring ATS keywords, and inflating grades. Each is small, but UK recruiters notice them quickly.
Is it a problem to put your date of birth on a UK CV? Yes, leave it off. Age is tied to UK equality law, so employers deliberately avoid asking for date of birth, and volunteering it only invites age bias. The same applies to other personal data like marital status.
Why shouldn't I use "I" throughout my CV? UK convention is implied first person, "Led the billing migration", "Delivered the quarterly report", which is tighter and easier to scan than repeating "I". Lead each bullet with a strong verb instead.
Do UK recruiters check grades? Yes. Recruiters check transcripts, so always state your real classification. Exaggerating a 2:1 into a first is a reference-killing mistake that can cost you the offer.
