You have found what looks like a great match: right title, right sector, right level. You tailor a CV, write a cover letter, apply, and then nothing happens, not even a rejection. Weeks later the same listing is still up, unchanged. There is a real chance that role was never going to be filled at all. Job-market trackers in 2026 have put the share of online postings that qualify as "ghost jobs," listings kept live with no real, active intent to hire, at close to half of what you see on major boards. That is not a reason to stop applying. It is a reason to get faster at recognising which listings are worth your time.

Why ghost jobs exist

Almost none of this is a conspiracy against candidates. A listing stays live after the role is filled because nobody remembered to take it down. A department posts "always hiring" pages to build a pipeline for a hire that might happen in six months, not now. A manager gets budget pulled after the advert goes up and does not bother unpublishing it. A company posts a role it has already informally offered internally, to satisfy a policy requiring external advertising. None of these are your fault, and none of them are visible from the advert alone unless you know what to look for.

Six signals worth checking before you apply

  • It has been reposted, repeatedly, for months. A listing that reappears every few weeks with the same text, sometimes for a year or more, is the single strongest tell.
  • The salary is suspiciously vague or absent. "Competitive" with no range, on a role that legally should carry salary transparency, often means nobody has actually budgeted the hire.
  • It sits on an "always hiring" or evergreen careers page. Some companies genuinely do keep a rolling pipeline open; treat these as lower-signal by default, not as urgent, real vacancies.
  • There is no named team, manager, or department anywhere. Real vacancies usually attach to a specific team with a specific gap. A role that could belong to almost any part of the business is a weaker signal.
  • The listing is identical, word for word, to postings from months or years ago. Copy-pasted adverts that never change wording usually were not written for a real, current need.
  • You get instant silence, not even an automated rejection, for weeks. One data point alone means little; the same pattern across several similarly generic-feeling listings is more telling.

What to do differently, not stop applying

None of this means fewer applications. It means better-aimed ones. A listing that fails three or more of the six checks above is not necessarily fake, but it is a weaker bet for the tailoring time it will cost you. Spend that time on listings that show the opposite signals: a specific, recent posting date, a named team, a real salary band, and a company that is otherwise visibly active, recent news, other genuinely fresh roles, real hiring activity on LinkedIn.

This is also exactly the kind of filtering that is hard to do by eye across dozens of tabs and easy for software to do at scale. Gorizzume's Job Match scores postings against your CV and surfaces genuinely live, well-matched roles rather than everything with a matching title, which does most of this filtering before you ever open a listing. If you are also running the high-volume, low-precision strategy we cover in applying to 100 jobs and hearing nothing, ghost jobs are one of the quiet reasons that strategy performs even worse than the maths alone suggests: some meaningful share of those hundred applications were never real chances to begin with.

A single ghost job costs you an evening. A search strategy that cannot tell them apart from real vacancies costs you weeks you will never notice you lost.

Frequently asked questions

What is a ghost job? A ghost job is a live job listing for a role that is not being actively, genuinely recruited for: it may already be filled, informally promised to an internal candidate, or kept open indefinitely to build a talent pipeline. It looks identical to a real vacancy from the outside.

How common are ghost jobs in the UK job market? 2026 trackers estimate close to half of postings on major job boards may qualify as ghost jobs to some degree, though the share varies by sector and platform. It is common enough that checking a handful of signals before applying is worth the extra minute.

What are the warning signs of a fake job listing? The clearest signs are a listing repeatedly reposted for months with identical wording, a vague or missing salary range, placement on an "always hiring" evergreen page, and no named team or hiring manager anywhere in the posting. No single sign is proof, but two or three together is a strong signal.

Should I still apply to a listing that looks like a ghost job? If it otherwise matches your skills well, it can still be worth a quick, low-effort application, but it is not worth the same tailoring time you would give a listing showing strong, active-hiring signals. Prioritise your best effort on postings with recent dates, named teams, and clear salary detail.
