Common questions

How long does the Graduate route last?
Two years for bachelor’s and master’s graduates applying on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates get three years either way. The change applies to new applications only — a visa already granted is not affected.
Can I work on the Graduate route without a sponsor?
Yes. The Graduate route is unsponsored: you can work for almost any employer, at any level, or be self-employed. It cannot be extended, and time on it does not count towards settlement, so most people switch to the Skilled Worker route before it ends.
Who can use the Youth Mobility Scheme?
Nationals of 13 countries and territories. Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea can apply up to age 35; everyone else up to age 30. Hong Kong, Taiwan and India are ballot-only — you need an invitation before you can apply. It gives two years, extendable to three only for Australian, Canadian and New Zealand nationals, and it does not lead to settlement.
How many hours can I work on a Student visa?
Up to 20 hours a week during term time if you are studying at degree level or above at a higher education provider, or 10 hours if you are below degree level. You can work full time during vacations. Self-employment and work as a professional sportsperson are not permitted.
