Questions students taking a placement year ask
What is an industrial placement?
A paid year working for one employer, usually between the second and final year of a sandwich degree, and usually assessed as part of the course. Engineering, science and computing courses build it in; business and finance courses often allow it. It is longer than an internship and paid closer to a graduate salary.
When do placement applications open and close?
Earlier than students expect. Several open in September and October of the year before the placement starts and close as soon as they are full, so a January application is often too late. Where an employer publishes no date we say so rather than printing one they never set.
Does a placement year lead to a graduate job?
Often, and that is the real argument for doing one. Many employers recruit their graduate intake first from the students who did a placement with them, which is why the placement round is competitive at firms whose graduate scheme is famous.
Do industrial placements offer visa sponsorship?
Almost never, and this is the catch that costs international students the most time. Several employers sponsor their graduate scheme and state plainly that placements and internships are excluded from the same policy. Each programme below carries the employer’s own words, so you can tell the difference before you spend an evening on the form.
