The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge runs a placement scheme for undergraduates considering a research career. Placements run eight to thirteen weeks, usually between July and September, and there are only 12 to 14 of them. A placement student leads their own project under a mentor, plans and carries out experimental research, learns new techniques, records and analyses data, reads papers, attends seminars, joins team discussions and presents results to lab colleagues. The LMB publishes a competitive salary for the period of the placement but no figure. On immigration the scheme is unusually explicit. It is open to UK nationals or those meeting UK residence requirements, to overseas students enrolled full time at a UK university on a valid student visa covering the placement, and to international students through the UKRI Temporary Worker Exchange Scheme. The LMB also hosts placements through the University of York GenerationResearch scheme, the Cambridge Experience Postgrad Life Sciences programme and the Cambridge Amgen Scholars Programme.
